Overview
Nanocomposites are multiphase solid materials in which at least one constituent phase has a dimension below approximately 100 nanometres, dispersed within a continuous matrix. The matrix may be polymeric, metallic, or ceramic, while the reinforcing or functional phase can take the form of nanoparticles, nanofibres, nanotubes, nanoplatelets, or nanoscale grains. Because such a large fraction of atoms resides at or near interfaces, nanocomposites often display mechanical strength, hardness, thermal stability, electrical conductivity, or electromagnetic response markedly different from those of the bulk parent materials. Processing routes are central to performance: techniques such as spark plasma sintering and field-activated consolidation densify carbide and boron nitride systems reinforced with single-walled carbon nanotubes while limiting grain coarsening, whereas blending conductive carbon nanofibres, graphite nanoflakes, and intrinsically conducting polymers such as polypyrrole with metallic carbonyl particles yields composites engineered for microwave absorption and adsorption. Classification commonly proceeds by matrix type and by reinforcement geometry, since dimensionality governs percolation thresholds and interfacial coupling. Key research concerns include controlling dispersion, tailoring the interphase region, and relating microstructure to functional behaviour. Applications span structural ceramics, electromagnetic shielding, energy storage, catalysis, and environmental remediation, making nanocomposites a foundational topic across materials science and nanotechnology.
