Overview

Rice and wheat research is the area of agronomy and crop science devoted to improving the production, quality, and sustainability of the two cereals that supply a large share of global dietary energy. Rice (Oryza sativa) and wheat (Triticum species) dominate cropping systems across much of the world, and research on them addresses varietal improvement, soil fertility and nutrient management, water and irrigation efficiency, residue and tillage practices, and resilience to abiotic and biotic stresses, alongside the management of paddy and rotational systems and their environmental footprint. Because these staples underpin food security, work spans genetics and breeding, agronomic management, nutrient-use efficiency, and the response of yield to changing climate and resource constraints. Research in cereal and field-crop agronomy published by the journal includes studies relevant to these goals, such as residue retention for agricultural sustainability in semi-arid tropics, strategies to improve fertiliser response and foodgrain production, the climate-land-food security nexus, precision in plant genetics and breeding, nitrogen-leaching estimation from paddy soils, soil testing for fertiliser recommendation, and resource management of seasonal fallows. These contributions address soil fertility, nutrient and water management, breeding, and sustainability in cereal-based cropping systems, the same priorities that drive efforts to raise and stabilise rice and wheat production.
