Overview
Antioxidants and cancer prevention concerns the study of how compounds that neutralise free radicals and reactive oxygen species may reduce the risk of cancer development. Oxidative stress, the imbalance between reactive species and cellular defences, can damage DNA and other macromolecules in ways that contribute to mutation and malignant transformation. Antioxidants are investigated because, by scavenging reactive species, donating electrons, and chelating catalytic metal ions, they may limit this damage and the chronic processes that promote carcinogenesis. This field examines antioxidants from the diet and from natural sources, including vitamins, minerals, phenolics, and flavonoids present in fruits, vegetables, medicinal plants, and oils. Research characterises the antioxidant capacity of plant extracts and isolated phytochemicals, often correlating activity with total phenolic and flavonoid content and quantifying it through standardised measures of total antioxidant status. Cell-based and model studies explore protective effects against oxidative injury relevant to cancer biology, while related work considers antioxidant action in other oxidative-stress-related and age-associated conditions. At the same time, the relationship between antioxidants and cancer is recognised as complex: protective associations observed for antioxidant-rich diets do not always translate to supplementation, and outcomes depend on dose, context, and the broader redox environment, making rigorous evaluation essential.
