Overview
HIV diagnosis and management comprises the clinical processes of detecting human immunodeficiency virus infection and providing lifelong, evidence-based care. Diagnosis uses antibody and antigen-antibody immunoassays, rapid point-of-care tests, and confirmatory or nucleic-acid assays, with attention to window-period and false-positive results. Management centers on combination antiretroviral therapy (cART), staged using CD4 cell counts and viral-load monitoring, together with adherence support, prevention and treatment of opportunistic infections, and management of drug toxicity and comorbidities across the care continuum. Research collected under this topic addresses the practical realities of testing and long-term care, particularly in resource-varied settings. Studies examine external quality assessment of HIV testing programs, accuracy issues such as false-positive rapid tests, and demographic and clinical profiles of patients in the antiretroviral era. Treatment-focused work analyzes highly active antiretroviral therapy regimens, adverse drug reactions and their direct costs, and the psychosocial factors shaping treatment adherence, alongside disability outcomes in cohorts on long-term therapy and disclosure of diagnosis to children receiving treatment. Reports also cover associated conditions and complications encountered in HIV-positive patients. This peer-reviewed literature supports clinicians and program managers working to strengthen diagnosis, therapeutic outcomes, and sustained engagement in care.
