Overview

The gastrointestinal tract is the continuous muscular tube extending from the mouth to the anus, comprising the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, and large intestine, and supported by accessory organs including the liver, gallbladder, and pancreas. It performs digestion, nutrient and water absorption, immune surveillance, and waste elimination, and participates in endocrine signaling through enteroendocrine cells. Its mucosa is a barrier continually exposed to dietary antigens, microbes, and xenobiotics, making it a site of diverse pathology: inflammation, infection, fistula formation, neoplasia, and malabsorption following surgery. Research relevant to this topic includes rare metastatic malignant melanoma of the GI tract, duodenocolic fistula as a complication of gastrointestinal tuberculosis, nutritional deficiencies and Wernicke encephalopathy following bariatric procedures such as sleeve gastrectomy, capsaicin as a potential adjuvant in inflammatory bowel disease, and the role of Helicobacter pylori in extragastric conditions. Related work addresses the market for anti-ulcer drugs, peptide-based enteral formulas in pediatric populations, and the food-preservative and health-promoting properties of plant compounds within the gut.
