Overview

Biomarkers are measurable biological indicators, ranging from molecules and genes to cells and imaging features, that reflect normal physiology, disease processes, or responses to treatment. They are classified by application as diagnostic, prognostic, predictive, and monitoring markers, and may be measured in blood, urine, saliva, tissue, or by imaging. Biomarkers enable early detection, disease subtyping, risk stratification, and the assessment of therapeutic response, and increasingly include molecular and epigenetic signatures identified through omics and bioinformatic approaches. The peer-reviewed research collected here reflects these themes through reviews of molecular biomarkers, identification of newborn microRNA expression as potential disease-diagnostic markers, and choroidal imaging biomarkers in age-related macular degeneration. Cancer and inflammation contributions examine epigenetic biomarkers in head and neck cancer, long non-coding RNAs as epigenetic markers in tobacco- and alcohol-associated cancer, and cellular and molecular biomarkers of anti-inflammatory activity in probiotic-fermented foods. Further work addresses preconception immunological markers in unexplained female infertility, vital-organ cell-based biomarker assessment, and metabolomic tools for characterizing environmental exposure. Methodologically, the literature draws on molecular and epigenetic profiling, imaging, cell-based assays, immunological measurement, and metabolomics, illustrating how biomarker research connects molecular characterization with clinical decision-making across oncology, ophthalmology, reproductive medicine, and environmental health to support detection, prognosis, and treatment monitoring.
