Overview

RNA aptamers are single-stranded pieces of nucleic acid molecules which, like proteins, can fold into unique three-dimensional shapes that can recognize and bind to specific molecules. Unlike proteins, they are synthesized in the laboratory, and can be created to bind to a wide variety of molecules, including small molecules, drugs, and proteins. This makes them useful in a variety of research and therapeutic applications. Aptamers can be used to detect and diagnose diseases, fuel drug discovery and development, and help target drugs to specific tissues in the body. They offer a number of advantages over current therapeutic technologies, including low cost, high specificity, and low toxicity.
