Overview
The adrenal glands are a pair of small, triangular endocrine organs that sit on top of each kidney and secrete hormones essential to metabolism, blood pressure, electrolyte balance, and the body's response to stress. Each gland has two functionally distinct regions: the outer cortex, which produces steroid hormones including cortisol, aldosterone, and adrenal androgens, and the inner medulla, which releases the catecholamines adrenaline and noradrenaline. Through these hormones the adrenal glands help regulate heart rate, blood glucose, sodium and potassium levels, immune function, and the fight-or-flight response, making them central to homeostasis. Disorders of adrenal function range from insufficiency, as in Addison's disease, to overproduction states such as Cushing's syndrome and hyperaldosteronism, as well as tumors that can be benign or malignant. Within endocrinology, study of the adrenal glands connects to broader questions of hormonal signaling, neuroendocrine regulation, and inherited endocrine conditions. Research published in this journal has examined adrenal structure and catecholamine secretion in animal models, including experimental work on adrenal gland morphology in Wistar rats and on adrenal catecholamine responses in models of hypothalamic obesity. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to the adrenal glands and their role in endocrine and hormonal physiology.
