Overview
Glucose metabolism is the network of enzyme-catalyzed pathways through which cells take up, store, and oxidize glucose to generate energy and biosynthetic intermediates. Glucose entering the cell is phosphorylated and processed via glycolysis to pyruvate, which may be oxidized through the citric acid cycle and oxidative phosphorylation, diverted into the pentose phosphate pathway, or stored as glycogen; gluconeogenesis and glycogenolysis maintain supply during fasting. The process is tightly regulated by insulin and glucagon and by key Enzymes, and its dysregulation underlies diabetes mellitus, insulin resistance, obesity, and altered tumor metabolism. Research relevant to this topic includes the impact of nutrients on diabetes, the targeting of cell metabolism in chronic lymphocytic leukaemia, bioinformatic and metabolomic characterization of type 2 diabetes, and dietary interventions such as bitter melon for lowering blood sugar. Related work examines adipose tissue physiology and obesity, thyroid-hormone contributions to metabolic adaptation, antioxidant micronutrients in metabolic syndrome, postprandial glycemia and lipemia after defined meals, and the effects of low energy intake on glucose regulation and stamina. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on Enzymes and the metabolic pathways of glucose handling, addressing biochemical mechanisms, regulation, and their relevance to metabolic and endocrine disease.
