Overview

In vitro refers to biological experiments and procedures carried out outside a living organism, in a controlled laboratory environment such as a culture dish, test tube, or assay system, rather than within an intact body. The term, meaning literally in glass, distinguishes such studies from in vivo work in living organisms and from in silico computational modeling. In vitro systems allow precise control of conditions and direct observation of cells, tissues, and molecules, making them central to cell biology, pharmacology, toxicology, and reproductive science. Applications relevant to this area include in vitro disease models for preclinical cardiotoxicity and safety testing, the maturation of oocytes and assisted reproduction, three-dimensional wound-healing models, assessment of drug activity and gene silencing in cultured cells, evaluation of biofilm formation and antimicrobial activity, and the derivation and study of stem cells. In vitro assays enable screening of compounds, investigation of cellular mechanisms, and biomarker development while reducing reliance on animal testing in early research. Their limitations include the absence of the full physiological context of a living system, so findings are often validated in vivo. As a foundational experimental approach, in vitro methods provide reproducible, mechanistic insight into cellular and molecular processes across drug development, disease modeling, and basic biological research.
