Overview

Biotechnology is the application of scientific and engineering principles to living organisms and their molecular components to create useful products and processes. Operating at the cellular and molecular level, it exploits cells, microorganisms, enzymes, and nucleic acids through methods such as genetic modification, fermentation, and bioprocessing to deliver advances across healthcare, agriculture, industry, and environmental management. In medicine it supports the manufacture of therapeutics, vaccines, and diagnostics and informs drug design and personalised treatment; in agriculture it contributes to crop and plant improvement and the development of organisms with desired traits; and in industry it harnesses microbial and yeast systems to produce enzymes, fuels, and bioproducts. The cultivation of algae and cyanobacteria exemplifies its versatility, offering applications in food, energy, medicine, and environmental remediation, while bioremediation uses biological activity to degrade pollutants. The field is tightly coupled with bioinformatics, which organises and interprets the large datasets arising from genomics, proteomics, and metabolomics, accelerating discovery and rational design. Often portrayed as evolving through successive generations of innovation, biotechnology continues to expand with progress in molecular techniques, network and systems approaches, and computation, and is frequently positioned as a means of addressing major challenges, from disease and food production to sustainability and climate change.
