Overview

Bleeding disorders are a group of conditions in which the blood's ability to clot is impaired, leading to prolonged, excessive, or spontaneous bleeding. Normal clotting depends on a coordinated interaction among blood platelets, clotting factors, and the blood vessel wall; defects in any of these components can result in a bleeding tendency. The disorders may be inherited, as in hemophilia A and B, which arise from deficiencies of specific clotting factors, von Willebrand disease, the most common inherited bleeding disorder, and rarer factor deficiencies; or they may be acquired, as in certain forms of thrombocytopenia or disorders affecting platelet function or clotting proteins. Symptoms can range from easy bruising and prolonged bleeding after injury to spontaneous bleeding into joints, muscles, or other tissues. Diagnosis relies on a combination of clinical history and laboratory testing of platelet counts, clotting times, and specific factor levels. Research published in this journal relevant to bleeding disorders includes work on the genetic mutations underlying inherited bleeding disorders, abnormalities of von Willebrand factor and ADAMTS13, laboratory tests used in immune thrombocytopenia, and factor XI deficiency, reflecting the diversity of these conditions. As an open-access journal devoted to Hematology and Oncology Research, this publication addresses disorders of the blood. This page collects peer-reviewed scholarship relevant to bleeding disorders and their diagnosis and management.
