Overview
Multiple myeloma is a cancer of plasma cells, a type of white blood cell that normally produces antibodies. In multiple myeloma, abnormal plasma cells proliferate in the bone marrow, crowding out healthy blood cells and producing abnormal proteins. This can lead to bone damage and pain, anemia, kidney problems, weakened immunity, and elevated calcium levels. As a hematological malignancy, multiple myeloma is diagnosed through blood, urine, imaging, and bone-marrow studies, and managed with a range of evolving therapies. Research published in Hematology and Oncology Research addresses the clinical features, complications, and treatment of multiple myeloma and related plasma-cell disorders. Work includes a report of plasma-cell pleocytosis as an uncommon complication in a post-bone-marrow-transplant patient, a case of lenalidomide-induced high-grade fever during myeloma treatment, an account of extraosseous plasmacytoma of the thyroid, and an evaluation of plerixafor for stem-cell mobilization in patients undergoing autologous transplant. These studies reflect real clinical experience with the disease and its management. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to multiple myeloma, supporting an evidence-based understanding of this plasma-cell cancer, its complications, and its treatment.
