Overview

Red blood cells, or erythrocytes, are the most numerous cellular component of blood and the principal vehicles of oxygen transport in vertebrates. In humans they are anucleate, biconcave discs packed with haemoglobin, the iron-containing protein that binds oxygen in the lungs and releases it to tissues while assisting in the return of carbon dioxide. Their distinctive shape and deformable membrane allow passage through narrow capillaries and maximise surface area for gas exchange. Erythrocytes are produced in the bone marrow through erythropoiesis, a process regulated by erythropoietin and dependent on adequate iron, vitamin B12, and folate, and their lifespan, count, and haemoglobin content are core haematological parameters. In haematology and oncology, red blood cells are central to the diagnosis and management of anaemias and haematological disease, to transfusion practice, and to disorders such as sickle cell disease. Research examines red-cell preservation and storage, including antioxidant protection and nanotechnology-based approaches, transfusion ordering and blood-management practice, and red-cell involvement in systemic conditions. Their function, production, and pathology underpin much of clinical haematology. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on erythrocytes, haematological parameters, transfusion practice, and red-cell-related disorders.
