Surgical oncology is the branch of medicine and surgery devoted to the surgical management of cancer, including the diagnosis, staging, removal and reconstruction associated with tumours. Surgical oncologists work to remove cancerous tissue while preserving function where possible, and they collaborate closely with medical and radiation oncologists, pathologists and other specialists within multidisciplinary cancer care. The field requires detailed knowledge of cancer biology, tumour staging and operative technique, and it continues to evolve alongside advances in imaging, minimally invasive methods and precision treatment.
