Overview

Clinical psychology is the branch of psychology devoted to the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental health disorders and psychological distress. Integrating psychological theory, scientific research, and applied practice, clinical psychologists work to understand and address emotional, behavioral, and cognitive difficulties across the lifespan, from childhood through older age. The field encompasses a wide range of conditions, including anxiety, depression, trauma-related disorders, and more severe forms of mental illness, and it employs evidence-based therapeutic approaches such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, psychodynamic therapy, and other interventions tailored to the individual. Clinical psychologists use structured assessment, interviews, and standardized tools to formulate an understanding of a person's difficulties and to guide treatment, and they often collaborate with other health professionals. The discipline also contributes to research on the causes and mechanisms of psychological problems and on the effectiveness of treatments. Research published in this journal relevant to clinical psychology includes work on the consequences of emotional repression for physical health, mental health, and general well-being, reflecting interest in how psychological processes shape health outcomes. As an open-access journal devoted to Human Psychology, this publication addresses the study of mind, behavior, and well-being. This page collects peer-reviewed scholarship relevant to clinical psychology and mental health.
