Overview

Glaucoma screening is the testing of people for signs of glaucoma, a group of eye diseases in which damage to the optic nerve, often associated with raised pressure inside the eye, leads to progressive and irreversible loss of vision. Because glaucoma typically develops slowly and painlessly, with peripheral vision lost before central vision is affected, many people are unaware of it until significant damage has occurred, making early detection important. Screening is conducted by optometrists and ophthalmologists and may include measurement of intraocular pressure, examination of the optic nerve head, assessment of the visual field through perimetry, and imaging of the nerve fibre layer. It is particularly recommended for individuals at higher risk, such as older adults, those with a family history of glaucoma, and certain other groups. Early identification allows treatment that can slow or halt the progression of optic nerve damage and preserve sight. Research relevant to this topic includes determination of the annual incidence of visual field abnormalities using frequency doubling technology perimetry, a method employed to detect the functional vision loss characteristic of glaucoma. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to glaucoma screening and the early detection of glaucoma.
