Overview

Aortic disorders are conditions affecting the aorta, the principal arterial trunk conveying oxygenated blood from the left ventricle to the systemic circulation, and the aortic valve that governs ventricular outflow. They encompass valvular disease such as aortic stenosis and regurgitation, in which narrowing or incompetence of the valve alters haemodynamic load and ventricular function, and disease of the vessel wall including aneurysm, dissection and atherosclerotic and inflammatory degeneration. Aortic valve stenosis restricts ejection and imposes pressure overload that can progress to ventricular hypertrophy and heart failure, while aortic aneurysm reflects progressive dilatation of the wall with risk of rupture. Evaluation relies on clinical assessment together with echocardiography, Doppler and cross-sectional vascular imaging, and management ranges from medical therapy and risk-factor control to surgical and interventional repair or valve replacement. Research collected under this term reflects related cardiovascular and structural themes: abdominal aortic aneurysms and their clinical and echographic features, rheumatic and valvular heart disease, myxomatous mitral valve pathology, early vascular aging, haemodilution in complex cardiac surgery, splanchnic aneurysms, prenatal cardiac imaging, and experimental renovascular remodelling. The peer-reviewed literature in this area spans aortic valvular disease, aneurysmal and vascular wall pathology, structural heart disease and the imaging and surgical management of aortic and related cardiovascular conditions.
