Overview
Cardiovascular disease is a broad category of disorders affecting the heart and blood vessels, encompassing coronary artery disease, cerebrovascular disease, hypertensive heart disease, heart failure, valvular and congenital conditions, and peripheral vascular disease. It is among the leading causes of death and disability worldwide and is driven by a combination of modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors, including hypertension, dyslipidaemia, smoking, diabetes, obesity, physical inactivity and genetic predisposition. A central mechanism is atherosclerosis, the progressive accumulation of lipid, inflammatory cells and fibrous tissue within arterial walls, which narrows vessels and predisposes to myocardial infarction and stroke, while other pathways involve endothelial dysfunction, oxidative stress and adverse cardiac remodelling. Prevention and management emphasise risk-factor identification and control, lifestyle modification, and pharmacological and interventional therapy. Research collected under this term reflects these themes: cardiovascular risk factors and depressive symptoms in vulnerable diabetic elderly, candidate-gene regulation in human cardiovascular disease, cardiovascular risk in people treated for HIV, antioxidative and cardioprotective evaluation in experimental models, cardiovascular complications of menopause, effects of smoking and vaping on the cardiovascular system, and knowledge and prevalence of risk factors in community populations. The peer-reviewed literature in this area spans the epidemiology, risk factors, mechanisms and management of disorders of the heart and vasculature.
