Overview

Congenital heart disease refers to a group of structural abnormalities of the heart and its major blood vessels that are present at birth, arising from abnormal development of the cardiac walls, valves, arteries, or veins. These defects range from mild conditions that may go unnoticed to complex malformations that require early surgical or catheter-based intervention. Because they are the most common type of birth defect, congenital heart conditions are studied across the lifespan, from prenatal diagnosis through pediatric management and into adulthood, where many patients now survive with ongoing cardiovascular care needs. Key aspects of the topic include specific anomalies and their physiology, prenatal detection through fetal imaging, surgical and perioperative management, long-term cardiovascular risk, and the nutritional and developmental implications for affected infants. The journal publishes research relevant to these themes, including studies of activity and exercise capacity in relation to cardiovascular risk factors in congenital heart disease, case reports of specific anomalies such as Ebstein's anomaly, the evolution of fetal surgery, prenatal diagnostic imaging including three-dimensional ultrasound and Doppler angiography, the nutritional status of infants with single-ventricle physiology, and perioperative approaches in complex cardiac surgery. This work spans the diagnostic, surgical, and long-term-care dimensions of congenital heart disease alongside the broader field of cardiovascular health.
