Overview
Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a condition in which the coronary arteries that supply oxygen-rich blood to the heart muscle become narrowed or blocked, most often by the buildup of fatty, cholesterol-laden plaque in a process called atherosclerosis. As blood flow to the myocardium is restricted, CAD can cause chest pain (angina) and, if a plaque ruptures and a clot forms, can precipitate a heart attack, heart failure, arrhythmia, or sudden cardiac death. Major risk factors include smoking, high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, diabetes, obesity, and physical inactivity, and management ranges from lifestyle modification and medication to revascularization by angioplasty or bypass surgery. The International Journal of Heart Research has published extensively on these themes, including studies of percutaneous coronary intervention in very elderly patients, anatomical variation in the diameter of the left coronary artery and its branches, comparisons of single- versus multivessel disease in acute coronary syndromes, percutaneous intervention for a complex left main lesion, and a bioinformatic analysis of coronary-disease-associated SNPs and genes implicated in atherosclerosis. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to coronary artery disease, its risk factors, diagnosis, and treatment.
