Overview

Echocardiography is a noninvasive medical imaging technique that uses ultrasound to produce real-time images of the heart, allowing assessment of its structure, the function of its chambers and valves, and the patterns of blood flow within it. By measuring features such as chamber size, wall thickness, pumping function, and valve performance, echocardiography can diagnose a wide range of cardiac conditions, including heart failure, valvular disease, congenital heart defects, cardiomyopathies, and pericardial disorders, and it does so safely, without ionizing radiation. Advanced applications such as speckle-tracking strain imaging extend its ability to detect subtle abnormalities in cardiac mechanics. The International Journal of Heart Research has published numerous studies employing or evaluating echocardiography, including a speckle-strain imaging study of cardiac mechanics in hypertensive patients with normal ejection fraction, an assessment of the prevalence of congenital heart defects among neonates in Nigeria, a case of Ebstein's anomaly with right atrial thrombus, and a report of atypical constrictive pericarditis after heart transplantation. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to echocardiography and the ultrasound-based evaluation of cardiac structure and function.
