Overview
Mental health is the state of cognitive, emotional, and social well-being in which an individual can cope with the ordinary stresses of life, function productively, and sustain meaningful relationships. It is a core component of overall health, shaped by biological, psychological, social, and environmental influences across the lifespan. Research in this area examines the conditions that support or undermine mental health, including stigma and compassion satisfaction among mental health service providers, the compassion fatigue and coping strategies of those working in psychiatric settings, and the influence of religion, social support, and emotional expression on well-being. Studies also address mental health within specific populations and circumstances, including survivors of cancer, sexual and gender minority youth, climate-displaced women, and partners of veterans facing mental health difficulties, as well as community-based promotion and the collection of global opinion data to advance well-being. The psychological consequences of crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic are further examined. The significance of mental health lies in its foundational role in functioning and quality of life, its bidirectional relationship with physical health, and the wide-ranging consequences of unmet need, including distress and disability. Promoting and protecting mental health depends on reducing stigma, strengthening social support, addressing the determinants of distress, and integrating mental health care into broader health systems and community life.
