Overview

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a progressive, long-term loss of kidney function in which the kidneys become increasingly unable to filter waste and regulate fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base balance. It is typically identified by a sustained decline in the glomerular filtration rate or by persistent markers of kidney damage such as proteinuria, and it is classified into stages that describe the severity of functional loss. CKD frequently arises from systemic conditions, most commonly diabetes and high blood pressure, and often progresses quietly before symptoms appear. CKD is an important public health concern because impaired kidney function affects the whole body and is linked with a higher risk of cardiovascular disease, hospitalization, and death. Complications include anemia, disordered iron metabolism, mineral and bone abnormalities, and disturbances of hormones such as those of the thyroid; the most advanced stage may require dialysis or transplantation. The articles indexed here examine several of these facets, including thyroid abnormalities in CKD, anemia and hepcidin regulation, hypertension patterns by disease stage, gene-expression changes in haemodialysis patients, the cardiorenal relationship, and the nephrotoxic potential of iodinated contrast agents. Management commonly combines treatment of the underlying cause with lifestyle measures, medication, and monitoring to slow progression and reduce complications.
