Overview

Nerves are the bundled, cable-like structures of the peripheral nervous system through which electrochemical signals are conveyed between the central nervous system and the tissues of the body. Each nerve is composed of axons grouped into fascicles and wrapped by connective-tissue sheaths, the endoneurium, perineurium, and epineurium, with many axons myelinated by Schwann cells to accelerate conduction. Functionally, nerves are classified as sensory, motor, or mixed, carrying afferent information about sensation toward the central nervous system and efferent commands to muscles and glands, while autonomic fibres regulate involuntary visceral function. Their anatomy is marked by characteristic branching, communicating connections, and passage through defined anatomical compartments where they are vulnerable to compression and injury. Research indexed under this topic examines the anatomical course and communicating branches of cranial and peripheral nerves, the morphology of nerves within structures such as the tarsal tunnel, entrapment and neuralgia and their surgical decompression, peripheral neuropathy including diabetic and infection-associated forms, perineural tumours, and pain syndromes following surgery. Approaches range from cadaveric and morphological study to clinical diagnosis and intervention. By detailing nerve structure, pathology, and treatment, this body of work underpins the diagnosis and management of disorders of the peripheral nervous system within the neurological and anatomical sciences.
