Overview
Anatomy is the branch of biology and medicine concerned with the structure and organisation of living organisms, examining how the body's parts are formed and spatially related. It is conventionally divided into gross (macroscopic) anatomy, the study of structures visible to the unaided eye; histology and microscopic anatomy at the tissue and cellular level; developmental and embryological anatomy describing how form arises; and clinical, surgical, and radiological anatomy that apply structural knowledge to diagnosis and intervention. As a foundational discipline it underpins physiology, pathology, surgery, and imaging, and increasingly informs fields such as prosthetics and biomedical engineering. Peer-reviewed work relevant to this topic includes comparative anatomy of neurovascular canals across species using cone-beam computed tomography, clinical anatomy of the newborn cranial vault, the role of anatomy as a foundation for medicine and surgery, neuroanatomy education through virtual brain atlases, anatomical correlates revealed by three-dimensional ultrasound and Doppler imaging, and the history of anatomical study and embalming. These contributions span descriptive, comparative, imaging-based, and educational approaches, illustrating how detailed structural understanding supports clinical practice and the basic sciences, an area in which the journal publishes peer-reviewed research.
