Overview
The ionic binding method, more commonly described as ionic bonding, is a type of chemical bonding in which one atom transfers one or more electrons to another, producing positively charged cations and negatively charged anions that are held together by electrostatic attraction. This electron transfer typically occurs between elements with large differences in electronegativity, such as a metal and a non-metal, and it gives rise to stable ionic compounds. Substances formed through ionic bonding often share characteristic properties, including high melting and boiling points, brittleness in the solid state, and the ability to conduct electricity when molten or dissolved in water because their ions become mobile. Ionic bonding is one of the foundational concepts of chemistry, governing the structure and behaviour of salts, the formation of electrolytes, and the behaviour of charged species in solution.
