Overview
Powders are finely divided solids composed of discrete particles, typically ranging from sub-micron to millimeter scale, whose collective behavior is governed by particle size distribution, morphology, surface area, and interparticle forces. As a physical state intermediate between bulk solids and dispersed systems, powders are central to chemistry because their large specific surface area enhances reactivity, dissolution, and adsorption, while flowability, packing density, and agglomeration determine handling and processing. Production and modification routes include milling, precipitation, spray drying, vacuum freeze drying, and high-temperature sintering, each imparting distinct microstructure and crystallinity; drying method in particular affects the quality, color, and microstructure of food-derived powders. Characterization combines particle sizing, microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and compositional analysis to relate structure to performance. Powders underpin pharmaceutical formulation, ceramic and nanocomposite fabrication via field-activated spark plasma sintering, catalysis, and the preparation of mineral and nutritional products. New Developments in Chemistry publishes peer-reviewed research involving powdered materials, including comparison of drying methods for fruit powders, proximate and mineral characterization of cocoa and food powders, and the synthesis and consolidation of carbide and nanocrystal powders into advanced composites.
