Overview
Hyperlipidemia is a metabolic condition defined by elevated concentrations of lipids in the blood, principally cholesterol, triglycerides, or both, carried in lipoprotein particles such as low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and very-low-density lipoprotein. It may be primary, arising from genetic defects in lipid metabolism—as in familial combined hyperlipidemia, which clusters with insulin resistance and the metabolic syndrome—or secondary to diet, obesity, diabetes, and sedentary behavior. Excess LDL cholesterol promotes atherogenesis, establishing hyperlipidemia as a major modifiable risk factor for coronary artery disease and stroke. Diagnosis rests on the fasting lipid profile, and management combines dietary modification, weight reduction, and physical activity with pharmacotherapy, most notably statins and other lipid-lowering agents, alongside botanical and nutraceutical approaches under investigation. In the context of obesity, adipose-tissue dysfunction and altered lipid handling link weight gain to dyslipidemic states. Research relevant to this area examines the molecular and metabolic pathogenesis of familial combined hyperlipidemia and its association with metabolic syndrome, hypolipidemic effects of botanical agents compared with atorvastatin in fat-fed models, lipid responses in obesity interventions, and dietary influences on cardiometabolic risk. This peer-reviewed literature reflects the genetic, dietary, and pharmacologic dimensions of disordered blood lipids within the broader management of obesity and cardiometabolic disease.
