Overview

Oculoplastics and orbit surgery is a subspecialty of ophthalmology concerned with the surgical and reconstructive management of the structures surrounding and supporting the eye, including the eyelids, the orbit (the bony socket), the tear-drainage system, and the adjacent face. It encompasses procedures aimed at restoring function, correcting deformity, treating disease and trauma, and improving appearance, ranging from eyelid and tear-duct surgery to the repair of orbital fractures and the management of tumors affecting the orbit and lacrimal apparatus. Practitioners combine knowledge of ocular anatomy with reconstructive surgical technique to protect vision while addressing the periocular tissues. Within Ophthalmic Science, research relevant to this field includes clinical reports of conditions affecting the orbit and surrounding structures. Work in this area has described an orbitocranial injury caused by an unusual foreign object, an inverting papilloma of the lacrimal sac, and adenoid cystic carcinoma of the lacrimal gland, as well as the repair of a zygomatic fracture and its visual consequences. Such cases illustrate the diagnostic and surgical challenges encountered in managing orbital trauma, tumors, and tear-system disease. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research within the broad field of Ophthalmic Science relevant to oculoplastics and orbit surgery.
