Overview
Ophthalmic diseases and disorders comprise the pathological conditions that affect the structures of the eye and the visual pathway, impairing vision and, when untreated, leading to partial or complete blindness. They span disorders of the ocular surface and adnexa, the lens, the retina and optic nerve, and the mechanisms regulating intraocular pressure. Corneal disease includes inflammatory and ulcerative conditions such as Mooren's ulcer, a progressive peripheral corneal ulceration that may require surgical conjunctival resection when refractory to medical therapy. Retinal disorders encompass macular edema, including cystoid macular edema that can arise as an adverse drug effect, while elevated intraocular pressure is a central concern in glaucoma and a recognized risk during ocular surgery, with experimental models clarifying its effects on retinal function and ganglion cell survival. Neuro-ophthalmic and pain conditions such as herpetic ophthalmic neuralgia affect sensory perception in the ophthalmic region. Beyond pathophysiology, the field addresses the population burden of eye disease, examining visual impairment and its effect on quality of life, and the accessibility of and barriers to ophthalmic services, particularly in rural and under-resourced communities. Effective management depends on accurate diagnosis, timely medical or surgical intervention, and equitable delivery of eye care to preserve and restore sight.
