Overview
Retinal surgery is the branch of vitreoretinal ophthalmology concerned with the operative management of disorders affecting the retina and vitreous, the gel that fills the posterior segment of the eye. It addresses conditions in which medical therapy alone is insufficient, including rhegmatogenous and traction retinal detachment, giant retinal tears, vitreous hemorrhage, macular pathology, and complications of proliferative retinopathy. Core techniques include pars plana vitrectomy, scleral buckling, membrane peeling, endolaser photocoagulation, and intraocular tamponade with gas or silicone oil, with anatomical and functional outcomes increasingly assessed by spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) to document macular reattachment and residual structural change. Perioperative considerations such as transient elevation of intraocular pressure, inflammation, and retinal ganglion cell integrity are central to surgical safety, and adjacent anterior-segment procedures including cataract and intraocular lens surgery often intersect with retinal management in complex eyes. Vascular occlusive disease and macular edema may require combined surgical and pharmacologic strategies, including anti-vascular endothelial growth factor agents and corticosteroids. The journal publishes peer-reviewed surgical case series, imaging-based outcome studies, and technique reports spanning detachment repair, macular surgery, and the interface between retinal and cataract procedures.
