Overview

Parasite treatments are the medicines and therapeutic strategies used to eliminate parasitic organisms such as helminths (worms), protozoa, and ectoparasites from the body and to control the diseases they cause. Different classes of antiparasitic drugs target different organisms: anthelmintics act against worms, antiprotozoal agents against single-celled parasites such as those causing malaria, giardiasis, and toxoplasmosis, and topical or systemic agents against external parasites. The choice of treatment depends on accurate identification of the parasite, the site and severity of infection, and local patterns of drug resistance, and effective control often combines treatment with sanitation, vector control, and preventive public health measures. Parasitic infections remain a major cause of illness worldwide, particularly in resource-limited settings, where they contribute to anemia, malnutrition, and impaired development. Research in the journal Parasite Research surveys the epidemiology and burden of parasitic disease that frames the need for effective treatment, including studies of intestinal protozoan and helminth infection in human populations and evaluations of natural compounds and agents with anthelmintic activity against parasites. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to parasitic infection and its treatment.
