Overview
gondii Toxoplasma gondii is a single-celled parasite. It is found worldwide and can infect a wide variety of animals and humans. In humans, it can cause toxoplasmosis - a serious infection that can lead to serious health complications such as brain and eye damage. For pregnant women, it can also cause birth defects in their unborn child. It is spread through contact with contaminated food, animal feces, and infected cat litter. Treatment for toxoplasmosis includes antibiotics, although prevention is the best way to reduce the chances of becoming infected. In addition to being a threat to human health, Toxoplasma gondii is also of interest to scientists studying the effects of parasites on animal behavior.
