Overview

Chloroplasts are membrane-bound organelles in plant cells responsible for photosynthesis, converting light energy into chemical energy stored in sugars. Research published in Plant Cell Development examines chloroplast biology with particular emphasis on the earliest stages of plastid differentiation in growing plants. Studies have investigated the formation and characteristics of proplastids—the undifferentiated precursors to chloroplasts—in the apical meristems of crop species including flax and wheat, revealing how these organelles develop in regions of active cell division before leaves fully expand. Additional work has explored circular RNAs in plants, regulatory molecules that may influence various cellular processes including those in chloroplasts. The journal has also published research on how environmental stresses such as drought and salinity affect cereal crops at the proteomic and physiological levels, conditions known to impact chloroplast function and plant productivity. Understanding chloroplast development from proplastid stages through maturation is fundamental to comprehending how plants establish photosynthetic capacity, respond to environmental challenges, and ultimately determine crop yield and resilience under changing growing conditions.
