Overview
Molecular biology is the study of biological activity at the level of the macromolecules that carry and execute genetic information, principally nucleic acids and proteins, and of the interactions among them that govern gene expression, replication, and cellular function. The field connects the structure of DNA and RNA to the synthesis, regulation, and behaviour of proteins, and supplies the experimental techniques used to interrogate these processes. Core methods include nucleic acid amplification and sequencing, template-independent and template-directed synthesis of nucleic acid libraries, proteomic and genomic profiling, mass spectrometry, and the molecular detection of mutations and microbial strains. Work in this area spans the regulation of non-coding RNAs in plants, the identification of somatic mutations in human tumours, the molecular and evolutionary characterisation of RNA-binding proteins, the genetic basis of inherited anaemias, and the molecular confirmation of bacterial isolates in clinical settings. Across these contexts, molecular biology underpins diagnostics, the classification of disease, and the development of personalised and targeted therapies. By linking genotype to phenotype through reproducible biochemical and analytical assays, it provides the mechanistic foundation shared by genetics, cell biology, biochemistry, and much of contemporary biomedical and plant research.
