Overview

Sport refers to organized physical activity governed by rules and involving skill, exertion, and competition, encompassing individual and team disciplines pursued recreationally or at elite level. As a subject of medical and scientific study, sport spans the physiology of athletic performance, biomechanics of movement, prevention and management of injury, and the contribution of participation to physical and psychological health. Sports and Exercise Medicine addresses the musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, and metabolic demands of training and competition, the assessment and rehabilitation of injury, and the optimization of performance through monitoring, conditioning, and nutrition. The peer-reviewed work assembled here reflects this breadth: a systematic review of spinal-cord injuries in equestrian athletes, functional approaches to preventing ankle sprains, continuous glucose monitoring in elite football, hip-angle behaviour during landing in young athletes and its implications for injury-prevention programmes, balance testing with neuromuscular bandaging, the relationship between sports participation and academic achievement, and the role of sport and exercise in hypertension. Across these studies sport is examined through injury epidemiology and prevention, performance physiology, biomechanical analysis, and the health effects of participation. The collection situates sport as a domain in which physiological, biomechanical, and clinical knowledge converge to protect athlete health, prevent and treat injury, and enhance performance, reflecting peer-reviewed research in Sports and Exercise Medicine.
