Overview
Behavioral intervention is a structured approach that applies principles of learning and behavior to change specific behaviors, reduce problematic ones, and reinforce desired alternatives. Grounded in behavioral science, these interventions identify the antecedents and consequences that maintain a behavior and then use techniques such as reinforcement, prompting, modeling, skill teaching, and environmental modification to produce measurable change. Behavioral interventions are applied across many domains, including mental health, developmental and learning differences, health promotion, and the reduction of risky behaviors, and they may be delivered individually, in groups, or at the community level. In the context of Verbal Behavior, behavioral interventions are particularly relevant to teaching and strengthening communication and language skills by reinforcing functional verbal responses. The defining features of effective behavioral intervention include clear goals, objective measurement of behavior, and the use of evidence-based procedures to guide and evaluate change. Research relevant to behavioral and health-related intervention includes studies of risk-reduction programs for adolescents and non-pharmacological interventions for behavioral and health challenges, illustrating how structured strategies are designed and evaluated to modify behavior and improve outcomes. This page gathers material relevant to behavioral intervention within the Verbal Behavior literature.
