Overview

Breast milk is the nutrient-rich fluid produced by the mammary glands of a lactating mother to nourish her infant, widely regarded as the optimal food for newborns. It supplies proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals in proportions suited to an infant's growth and development, along with antibodies, enzymes, hormones, and other bioactive components that support immune defense and gut maturation. Its composition changes over time and adapts to the infant's needs, and breastfeeding is associated with benefits for both infant and maternal health, making it a central topic in maternal and child nutrition. Research in this journal examines the composition, expression, and promotion of breast milk and breastfeeding across diverse populations. Studies address programs to promote perceived adequate milk supply, awareness of breast milk composition among women, maternal assets and breast milk expression, the relationship between breastfeeding and melatonin for perinatal health, and the effect of storage containers on the macronutrient integrity of expressed milk. Additional work explores beliefs about and determinants of exclusive breastfeeding, the influence of religion and culture on infant feeding practices, and complementary feeding. Key aspects of the field include the nutritional and immunological properties of human milk, lactation and milk expression, exclusive breastfeeding and its determinants, and the storage and handling of breast milk.
