Overview
Gastroenterology is a branch of medicine focused on the digestive system and associated diseases. It covers a wide range of disorders such as gastroesophageal reflux (GERD), ulcers, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel diseases, and cancer of the digestive tract. Common treatments for these diseases include medication, lifestyle changes, nutritional counseling and, in some cases, surgery. Gastroenterologists also provide preventive screenings, such as colonoscopies, to detect and prevent diseases of the digestive system. By understanding and treating digestive disorders, gastroenterologists can help improve patients’ quality of life.
