Overview

Proton channels are specialized proteins that regulate the transport of protons (hydrogen ions) across cell membranes. They are involved in a variety of physiological events, such as energy production, neuronal excitability, contraction of cardiac muscle, and cell cycle regulation, and are essential for maintaining cellular physiology. Proton channels also function to carry out intercellular communication, enabling cells to transmit signals and coordinate cellular behavior.
