Overview
Racemization is the process wherein a molecule containing a stereocenter (a group of chemically equivalent atoms with different spatial arrangements) undergoes a chemical reaction, resulting in equal amounts of the two different stereoisomers, or enantiomers. This phenomenon is significant for processes such as drug metabolism, protein folding, and DNA replication. Racemization is also used in pharmaceutical production to produce pure forms of molecules, in order to ensure that the product meets the required standard. Racemization is also used to study and compare the effects of different molecules and their properties on the body.
