Before you begin
A strong submission makes its aging relevance, research context, methods, and responsibilities easy to assess. It does not need to promise a particular editorial outcome.
Readiness check
Use this short check before preparing the full manuscript package.
- The study’s relationship to aging, geriatric care, geroscience, health, care systems, or policy is explicit.
- The selected article type matches the evidence, design, and intended contribution.
- Population details, measures, outcomes, and the care or community setting are described precisely.
- Person-centred language identifies people and age ranges accurately without treating aging as a deficit by default.
Preparation sequence
Build a complete manuscript
Work through the sequence in order; each stage supports a reviewable and reusable research record.
Confirm the manuscript fits JARH
Start with the journal’s approved Aims & Scope. Explain the aging relevance, study population or setting, and the biological, clinical, behavioural, care, social, or policy question your work addresses.
Choose the article type and structure
JARH welcomes original research, systematic reviews and meta-analyses, methods or protocols, short communications, and policy-focused perspectives when the evidence and study design match the selected format.
Prepare a complete research record
Include a clear title, structured abstract, 4–6 keywords, methods, results, tables and figures, references, and any supplementary files that help readers assess or reproduce the work.
Complete the declarations before submission
Provide author names and affiliations, the corresponding author, ORCID iDs where available, contributions, ethics and consent information, funding, competing interests, and a Data Availability Statement.
Match reporting to the study design
Recognised reporting guidance can make the methods and evidence easier to evaluate. Use the framework that fits the work rather than treating a checklist as a substitute for clear reporting.

Use a recognised reporting framework appropriate to the design, and identify it in the manuscript where relevant.

Describe the study population, setting, measures, analysis, missing data, and limitations with enough clarity for readers to interpret the findings.

Use an explicit review method and make the search, selection, synthesis, and limitations transparent.

Qualitative studiesCOREQ where appropriate
Explain the research context, reflexivity, recruitment, analysis, and interpretation without reducing older adults or caregivers to stereotypes.
Ethics and transparency
Make declarations easy to find
Research involving people or animals should include the relevant ethics approval and consent information. Clinical trials should be prospectively registered in a WHO/ICMJE-recognised registry, with the registration number reported in the abstract and Methods. Include funding, competing interests, and data-availability information with the manuscript.
After you submit
JARH uses single-blind peer review, with double-blind review available on request. If revisions are requested, respond clearly to the editorial and reviewer points. After acceptance, the published record receives a DOI and is made available under CC BY 4.0, with authors retaining copyright.

Public Access and Funder Compliance
Some authors are required by their funders to make their research publicly available. Under the 2024 NIH Public Access Policy, Author Accepted Manuscripts accepted for publication on or after July 1, 2025, must be submitted to PubMed Central upon acceptance and made publicly available without embargo on the official date of publication.
What JARH provides: JARH publishes the Version of Record under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International licence. The journal also permits authors to deposit their Author Accepted Manuscript in funder-designated repositories. Upon acceptance, we confirm the accepted manuscript version and record the funder and grant information supplied by the authors.
Author responsibility: JARH does not currently deposit manuscripts in PubMed Central on behalf of authors. Authors are responsible for determining which funder requirements apply, initiating the appropriate repository submission and completing any required NIHMS approval steps.
Eligibility and successful processing through PubMed Central or NIHMS are determined according to the relevant funder and NIH/NLM requirements.
Important: The deposit of an individual article in PubMed Central may result in that article appearing in PubMed. It does not mean that JARH is indexed in MEDLINE, included in the PMC Journal List or that all JARH articles are available through PubMed. The journal's current coverage is listed on the Indexing page.
