OPEN ACCESS PUBLISHING

Article Processing Charges

The Journal of Biomaterials (JBI) operates a transparent open access model. APCs support expert peer review, professional production, and permanent global access to your research.

Publishing in JBI gives your work immediate visibility to clinicians, bioengineers, and materials scientists without subscription barriers. APC funding sustains the infrastructure that supports peer review integrity, data preservation, and long term access while meeting funder and institutional open access requirements.

APC At A Glance

JBI does not charge a submission fee. The Article Processing Charge is assessed only after a manuscript is accepted through independent peer review. The APC applies to research articles, reviews, short communications, case reports, and editorials accepted for publication.

JBI pricing is uniform to keep budgeting simple for laboratories and departments. If your study is supported by a grant, the APC can be covered as a publication cost and we can issue pro forma invoices or documentation for approvals. For multi author teams, the corresponding author may request institutional billing. All charges are billed in USD and are payable only after acceptance.

Standard APC Rate

Our pricing is designed to be predictable for authors, institutions, and funders while covering the full cost of open access publishing services.

Article Type APC (USD) When Charged Included Services
All Standard Article Types $1,200 After Acceptance Peer review management, production, DOI registration, and online publication

Editorial Independence

APC payment has no influence on editorial decisions. Every manuscript receives double blind peer review based solely on scientific quality, methodological rigor, and relevance to the biomaterials community.

What The APC Supports

Open access publishing requires sustained investment in editorial oversight, production quality, and research visibility. Your APC funds the services below, ensuring your work is discoverable and trusted worldwide.

01

Rigorous Peer Review

Specialist editor assignment, reviewer recruitment, and quality control for experimental design, biocompatibility, and material characterization protocols.

02

Production And Formatting

Professional copyediting, layout, and generation of HTML, PDF, and XML files to ensure accessibility across platforms and devices.

03

DOI And Metadata

Assignment of a permanent DOI and structured metadata preparation for indexing and scholarly discovery services.

04

Open Access Hosting

Secure hosting, journal website maintenance, and long term preservation for uninterrupted global access.

05

Ethics And Integrity

Plagiarism screening, conflict of interest checks, and adherence to JBI editorial policies that protect the research record.

06

Visibility And Reach

Support for indexing submissions, citation tracking readiness, and promotion of published content across the open access ecosystem.

Open Access Compliance And Reuse

Many funders require immediate open access and a CC BY license. JBI publishes under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0, enabling reuse with proper citation while protecting author attribution. We also support indexing submissions and metadata dissemination so your article is discoverable through scholarly search platforms. For data intensive studies, authors are encouraged to deposit datasets in trusted repositories and cite accession numbers in the manuscript. This improves transparency and supports reuse in materials design and clinical translation.

Waivers And Discounts

JBI is committed to equitable publishing. Waiver requests are reviewed case by case to ensure that financial barriers do not prevent publication of high quality biomaterials research.

Editors And Reviewers

Active editors and reviewers may qualify for APC discounts of up to 30 percent based on service history and current journal needs.

Authors From LMICs

Partial waivers are available for authors from low and lower middle income countries. Provide funding details during submission or contact the editorial office for guidance.

Students And Early Career Authors

Student authors with valid institutional identification may be eligible for a reduced APC of $540 USD for any accepted article type.

Membership And Institutional Plans

JBI membership options can reduce APC exposure for frequent contributors and partner institutions. Explore membership benefits to align cost with your publication volume.

Important Notes On Waivers

Waivers and discounts are not cumulative. Approval is based on eligibility and availability at the time of acceptance. Please request a waiver at submission or contact [email protected] before final acceptance to confirm options.

Payment And Withdrawal Policy

APC invoices are issued after acceptance. If you need documentation for institutional or grant processing, the editorial office can provide a detailed invoice and supporting materials.

Payment Process

Once your article is accepted, you will receive an invoice with a secure payment link and instructions. Payment can be completed by authors, institutions, or funding agencies. For questions about invoicing or payment timelines, please email [email protected].

All published articles appear under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License. Please review the copyright and licensing terms before submission.

Withdrawal Policy

Manuscripts withdrawn more than 3 days after submission incur a 30 percent APC withdrawal charge to cover administrative and reviewer coordination costs. Authors must request a formal withdrawal and receive confirmation before submitting the same work elsewhere.

For formatting and reporting requirements, consult the Instructions for Authors and editorial policies.

Submission Routes

JBI offers two streamlined submission pathways. Choose the route that best matches your workflow and include any waiver request in your cover letter or submission comments.
