Independence

Charges and editorial decisions

The charge is invoiced after a manuscript has been accepted. At no point before that does the editorial process take account of whether or how an author will pay.

Decisions
Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal. An author's ability to pay is not among them.
Handling
Paying, or being able to pay, does not affect the order in which a manuscript is handled, the reviewers assigned to it, or the time it takes.
Visibility
The charge buys publication and permanent open access. It does not buy promotion, placement or citation.
Difficulty paying
Authors who cannot meet the charge should write to the editorial office before submitting.Terms are settled case by case by the publisher's billing office, separately from the editorial process and after a decision has been taken on the science.
Payment

Invoicing and payment

  1. Acceptance. A decision is taken on the manuscript. Only then is an invoice raised.
  2. Invoice. The invoice goes to the corresponding author or to the institution or funder they nominate, with the detail needed for institutional payment.
  3. Payment. Payment is arranged with the publisher's billing office.Questions about an invoice, a purchase order or a funder arrangement go to [email protected].
  4. Production. Production proceeds and the article publishes with its DOI.
Withdrawal

Withdrawing a manuscript

Authors should contact the editorial office promptly and wait for written confirmation before submitting the work elsewhere.

Manuscripts withdrawn within 3 days of submission are not subject to a withdrawal charge.

Manuscripts withdrawn more than 3 days after submission incur a withdrawal charge equal to 30% of the journal's APC.

Authors must receive official withdrawal confirmation before submitting the manuscript to another journal.

The full editorial terms are on the editorial policies page.
