Conductivity–temperature–depth cast, drawn schematically. Vertical structure of this kind underlies most of the observational work the journal considers, from plankton distribution and benthic community structure to the propagation of sound in water.

Scope

What the journal considers

Four foundational disciplines spanning the physical, chemical, biological and geological study of the ocean. The Aims and Scope also welcomes wider fields and interdisciplinary marine research.

Physical oceanography and hydrodynamics: Ocean circulation and current systems, wave dynamics and coastal hydrodynamics, tidal and estuarine processes, mixing and stratification, sea-level variability, and ocean–atmosphere exchange.
Marine biogeochemistry and chemical oceanography: Carbon cycling and ocean acidification, nutrient dynamics, trace-metal biogeochemistry, dissolved organic matter, deoxygenation and hypoxia, and sediment–water interface processes.
Marine ecology and ecosystem dynamics: Plankton ecology and trophic interactions, benthic community structure, pelagic ecosystems, marine biodiversity, living marine resources and fisheries, and ecosystem responses to environmental change.
Marine geology and sedimentology: Seafloor morphology and tectonics, sediment transport and deposition, paleoceanography and climate reconstruction, submarine volcanism and hydrothermal systems, and coastal erosion and accretion.

Human clinical trials, patient-care studies and epidemiology centered on human health are outside scope. Editorial board and terms of publication

The editorial board comprises 10 members; 7 of them carry an ORCID iD. Their work covers plankton and coastal ecology, marine microbiology and biotechnology, fish biology and fisheries, cetacean ecology and marine protected areas, and ichthyology and systematics.

All submissions undergo initial editorial screening. Manuscripts that meet the journal's scope and minimum requirements proceed to independent peer review.

Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal.

Publishing terms and research integrity

The commitments below govern every manuscript. The full statements are on the Editorial Policies page.

Publication ethics: The journal follows the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) guidelines. Allegations of misconduct are investigated according to established COPE procedures.
Authorship: All authors must meet the ICMJE authorship criteria: substantial contribution, drafting or critical revision, approval of the final version, and accountability for the work.
Permits and protected settings: Studies involving protected species, marine protected areas or sensitive habitats require the appropriate permits. Animal research must comply with institutional guidelines.
Data availability: Every empirical research manuscript must include a data-availability statement. The journal encourages deposit in an appropriate repository to support reproducibility.
Competing interests: Authors, reviewers and editors declare financial and non-financial interests that could be seen to influence the work or its assessment.
Corrections and retractions: Errors found after publication are addressed by correction or, in serious cases, retraction, following COPE guidance. Notices are published and carry their own registered DOI.
Originality: Submissions must be original work that is not published elsewhere and not under consideration elsewhere.
Editorial independence: Editorial decisions rest with the handling editor and the editorial board. Payment of an article processing charge plays no part in the assessment of a manuscript.

Journal identifier: ISSN 2643-0282, registered for the electronic edition and resolving to this title in the ISSN Portal.
