Focused Themes with High Scholarly Impact

JOD periodically runs special issues on emerging themes in death studies, palliative care, bereavement, and related fields. These collections bring together concentrated scholarship and create a visible, citable hub for a specific topic area. How It Works

Submitting to an Ongoing Special Issue

Check Current Themes

Special issue themes are announced periodically as new initiatives are approved. If you do not see a current theme listed, contact the editorial office and we will share the latest opportunities.

Align Your Manuscript

Manuscripts submitted to a special issue should clearly address the stated theme and meet JOD standards for rigor, ethics, and reporting. Submissions outside the theme may be considered for regular issues when appropriate.

Submit Through ManuscriptZone

Approved special issue manuscripts are submitted through ManuscriptZone. Authors should note the special issue title in the cover letter so the editorial team can route the paper to the correct guest editor.

Guest Editor Coordination

Special issues are led by guest editors in collaboration with the JOD editorial board. This team ensures consistent review standards, manages timelines, and confirms that the issue delivers cohesive scholarly value.

Author Guidance

Authors should follow the JOD instructions for authors and include a clear cover letter specifying the special issue theme. If you are unsure which issue fits your manuscript, contact [email protected] for guidance.

Fit and Scope

Special issue submissions should directly address the announced theme and provide new insight for clinicians, counselors, or policy makers. If a manuscript partially aligns with the theme, the editorial office may recommend transfer to a regular issue to ensure the best audience fit.

Deadlines and Planning

Each special issue includes target deadlines for submissions and revisions. Meeting these dates helps the issue publish as a cohesive set. If you need an extension, contact the editorial office early so the guest editors can coordinate schedules fairly.

Special issues highlight emerging topics and elevate collaborative research. JOD supports these collections with the same rigor and care as every published article.
