How the work is handled
Editorial practice
- Where responsibility sits
- Editorial direction rests with the Editor-in-Chief, working with three Executive Editors and the editorial board. Named editors take the decisions and are accountable for them.
- Assignment by subject
- Manuscripts are directed to editors whose own research lies closest to the submission. The board is composed so that protein-scale work, genome-scale work and studies that read the two together can each be assessed by members who work in that area.
- Competing interests and recusal
- An editor with a financial, institutional or personal interest in a manuscript stands aside, and a colleague handles it instead. Editors who submit their own work to the journal are handled by another editor, and their authorship is disclosed on the published article.
- Peer review
- All submissions undergo initial editorial screening. Manuscripts that meet the journal's scope and minimum requirements proceed to independent peer review. Single-blind by default; double-blind review is available on request. Reviewers advise; the decision stays with the editor.
- Independence of the decision
- Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal. Decisions rest with the editors alone, and are taken independently of any fee, membership, service or role.
- Confidentiality
- Submitted manuscripts are treated as confidential. Reviewers keep unpublished material to the review itself and securely delete downloaded files once the review is submitted.
