Why the journal exists

That is the position the journal was founded to occupy, and it remains its purpose. JPGR publishes the research by which proteins and genomes are measured, analyzed and interpreted: the experimental work itself, the computational and statistical work that makes sense of it, and the biological questions both are used to answer.

Its disciplinary role is to hold that work in one peer-reviewed record, across organisms, systems and platforms.

Two disciplines, one record

Proteomics and genomics are each within JPGR’s scope in their own right. A study of protein identification, quantification, modification or interaction belongs here on its own terms, and so does a study of sequence variation, genome function or regulation. Neither discipline is treated as an adjunct of the other.

Research that reads protein evidence and sequence evidence together is equally within scope. It is a legitimate part of the journal’s remit rather than a condition of it.

Who the journal is for

JPGR is written for researchers who work at protein and genome scale: experimental groups in mass spectrometry and sequencing; methodologists in computation, statistics and data resources; and the biological, microbial, environmental and clinical investigators who depend on those measurements to support a conclusion.

Its readers include those looking for a procedure they can adopt and cite, as well as those looking for a result. What the journal has published is listed in full in the archive, and the most recent work appears in the current issue.

Three Executive Editors and an editorial board of 37 members in 6 countries share responsibility for assessment, 12 of them listing an ORCID iD. Every member is named, with affiliation, on the Editorial Board page; the expectations placed on them are set out in the Editors Guidelines and the Reviewer Guidelines.

Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal. Reviewers advise; the decision is the editor’s, and it is taken independently of any fee, membership, service or role.

How the journal publishes

Peer review

All submissions undergo initial editorial screening. Manuscripts that meet the journal’s scope and minimum requirements proceed to independent peer review. Single-blind by default; double-blind review is available on request.

Open access and rights

Articles are published open access under CC BY 4.0, and authors retain copyright. Readers may reuse the work, including for commercial purposes, provided the original is attributed.

Article processing charge

USD 2,100, charged after acceptance only. There is no submission fee. The charge is administered by the editorial office and takes no part in the editorial decision. The complete terms, including the withdrawal policy, are on the Article Processing Charges page.

Data and reporting

Every empirical research manuscript must include a data-availability statement. Reporting, ethics and integrity requirements are set out in the Editorial Policies, and manuscript preparation requirements in the Instructions for Authors.

The citable record

Articles are registered with Crossref under the DOI prefix 10.14302 and are citable by DOI. Identifier, harvesting, discovery and preservation arrangements are described separately on the Indexing page.
