  • Supplementary data files, if applicable.
  • Ethics approval documentation available upon request.
  • Permissions for reused figures or third party content.
Authorship, Acknowledgments, and Funding

Authorship should reflect substantial contributions to study design, data acquisition, analysis, or manuscript drafting. All authors must approve the final version and agree to be accountable for their contributions.

  • List authors in agreed order and provide institutional affiliations.
  • Acknowledge contributors who do not meet authorship criteria.
  • Disclose all funding sources and grant numbers.
  • Provide ORCID identifiers when available.
Corresponding Author Responsibilities

The corresponding author manages communication with the journal, ensures that all coauthors approve the submission, and confirms that ethical documentation is complete. This role includes responding to reviewer comments and approving final proofs.

Ensure all coauthors review the final manuscript and confirm data accuracy before submission.

Language, Units, and Abbreviations

Use standard SI units, define abbreviations at first use, and avoid unexplained jargon. Spell out drug names and species terminology when first mentioned. Ensure tables and figures use consistent units and rounding.

Ethics and Animal Welfare

All animal studies must comply with institutional and national welfare regulations. Provide ethics approval numbers, welfare oversight details, and owner consent where applicable. For wildlife studies, include permits and conservation approvals.

  • Use ARRIVE guidelines for animal research reporting when relevant.
  • Describe humane endpoints and welfare monitoring protocols.
  • Document owner consent for identifiable animal images or case details.
Clinical Trials and Registry Information

Clinical trials should be registered in an appropriate registry when applicable. Include registration numbers and registration dates in the manuscript and cover letter.

Case Reports and Clinical Images

Case reports should present a clear clinical lesson, diagnostic pathway, and outcome. Include owner consent for identifiable images or details and describe any deviations from standard care.

  • Provide a concise case history, diagnostics, treatment, and follow up.
  • Include high quality images with clear legends and anonymized labels.
  • Explain the clinical significance and relevance to practice.
Reporting Guidelines and Data Transparency

Use relevant reporting guidelines such as CONSORT for trials, STROBE for observational studies, and PRISMA for systematic reviews. Provide data availability statements and cite repositories where data are shared.

  • Describe statistical tests, confidence intervals, and handling of missing data.
  • Provide software versions and code availability when possible.
  • Include conflict of interest and funding statements.
Data Archiving and Repository Use

We encourage authors to deposit datasets in trusted repositories with DOI support. When data cannot be shared due to owner privacy or legal agreements, explain the restriction and provide a contact pathway for qualified requests.

Conflicts of Interest

Authors must disclose any financial, professional, or personal relationships that could be perceived to influence the research. Include disclosures in the manuscript and cover letter.

Figures, Tables, and Supplementary Material

Keep figures and tables focused on essential results. Provide clear titles, legends, and units. Supplementary files should add value but not replace main results.

  • Submit figures as separate files at publication quality resolution.
  • Ensure tables are editable and include units and abbreviations.
  • Label supplementary items clearly and reference them in the text.
Statistical Reporting Standards

Describe statistical methods in enough detail for replication. Report effect sizes, confidence intervals, and significance levels where appropriate. Explain how missing data, outliers, and multiple comparisons were handled.

References and Citation Style

References are cited by number in the order of appearance. List the first five authors followed by "et al." for additional authors. Authors are responsible for accuracy and completeness.

Example: Sariah A, Rugemalila J, Somba M, Minja M, Makuchilo M et al. (2016) Experiences with disclosure of HIV-positive status to the infected child: Perspectives of healthcare providers in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. BMC Public Health. 16(1), 996-1083.
Originality and Plagiarism

All submissions must be original and not under consideration by another journal. JVHC screens manuscripts for plagiarism and redundant publication. Authors should disclose related manuscripts or prior conference abstracts in the cover letter.

Use of AI Tools

If AI tools are used for language editing or analysis, authors must disclose this in the manuscript. AI tools do not replace author responsibility for accuracy or originality.

Acknowledgments

Acknowledgments should recognize contributions that do not meet authorship criteria, such as technical assistance or data collection support. Obtain permission from individuals before naming them.

Preprints and Prior Publication

JVHC considers manuscripts posted as preprints if disclosed at submission. Update the preprint record after publication and cite the preprint DOI in your cover letter. Submissions must not be under consideration elsewhere.

Revisions and Resubmissions

If revisions are requested, submit a point by point response to reviewer comments. Highlight manuscript changes and provide rationale when requested edits cannot be completed. Revised manuscripts should be returned within the requested timeframe.

Open Access, Licensing, and APCs

All accepted articles are published under a Creative Commons license to enable broad reuse with attribution. APCs are applied only after acceptance and support editorial management, production, and archiving. Current charges and waivers are listed on the Article Processing Charges page.

After Acceptance

Once accepted, manuscripts proceed to copyediting and proof review. Authors approve proofs before final publication. Articles receive DOIs, are indexed for discoverability, and remain permanently archived.

We recommend that authors retain raw data and analysis files for an appropriate period after publication in case of audit or replication requests.

If you have questions at any stage, the editorial office can assist with formatting, submission routing, or policy clarification.
